Program schedules may change. Always confirm class times and locations at sanantonio.gov/ParksAndRec before visiting.
San Antonio is one of the most active cities in Texas for older adults. And most of the best options are completely free.
You do not need a gym membership to stay healthy. You need the right places and the right programs. Here are seven that work.
1. Free Fitness Classes in the Park – All Over San Antonio

Fitness in the Park is a citywide, award-winning program from the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department. It offers free exercise and fitness classes at parks, community centers, and libraries across the city. No registration required for most classes.
Classes include yoga, tai chi, Zumba Gold, Water Aerobics, Walk Fit, and organized Walking Groups. Something runs every single day of the week.
Check the current schedule at sanantonio.gov/ParksAndRec.
2. Walk the River: 28 Beautiful Miles Right Here in San Antonio

The San Antonio River Walk Hike and Bike Path stretches 28.5 miles from Brackenridge Park to the Medina River Greenway. It is wide, paved, flat, and completely free.
The Mission Reach section is quiet and scenic. The Museum Reach runs through the heart of the city. Both are open every day and perfect for a morning walk.
3. Try San Antonio’s Fastest Growing Senior Sport: Pickleball

Pickleball is everywhere in San Antonio right now. It is social, low impact, and genuinely fun from the very first session.
Free Pickleball 101 classes run through Fitness in the Park at city locations across town. Participants learn the basics and build skills at their own pace. No experience needed at all. Even better, you don’t have to spend a fortune to get a racket and start playing.
4. Walk With the Oasis Senior Steppers

San Antonio Oasis runs a walking group built just for seniors. The Senior Steppers walk about 2 miles at a different park or trail each session.
It is a wonderful way to explore the city, meet new people, and stay moving at the same time. Find the schedule at san-antonio.oasiseverywhere.org.
5. Explore San Antonio’s Best Senior Friendly Parks

Phil Hardberger Park on the North Side has flat, shaded walking loops and outstanding birdwatching along the way. Woodlawn Lake Park near downtown offers a beautiful 1.25-mile paved loop around the lake.
Both parks have free parking, clean restrooms, and benches along the path. Both are perfect for a relaxed and enjoyable walk any day of the week.
6. Jump in the Pool — Aqua Fitness Is a Game Changer

Water exercise is one of the best workouts available for older joints. The YWCA Olga Madrid Community Center offers an aquatics program for older adults Monday through Friday, 8am to 11am, with an indoor heated pool open year-round.
The city also offers Water Aerobics and Water Walking classes seasonally through Fitness in the Park. Your joints will thank you.
7. Find the Free Mobile Fit Program Near You

The Mobile Fit San Antonio unit is a retrofitted city vehicle that brings free fitness classes and health screenings directly to neighborhoods across San Antonio. Screenings include blood pressure and body mass index checks at no cost.
The unit moves to different locations each month. Check sanantonio.gov/ParksAndRec to see where it shows up next in your area.
